Brien McMahon Science Department Chairperson Tom Seuch was named Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Outstanding Educational Leader at the PLTW national summit in San Antonio, Texas last month. This is the highest honor given to PLTW educational leaders.

Project Lead The Way is a nonprofit organization that empowers students to develop in-demand, transportable knowledge and skills through pathways. Offered at both Brien McMahon High School and Norwalk High, the PLTW Engineering pathway engages students in collaborative, real-life activities such as working with a client to design a home, programming electronic devices or robotic arms, or exploring algae as a biofuel source. Students work together to imagine and design solutions to local and global challenges.

PLTW Outstanding Teachers and PLTW Outstanding Educational Leaders were selected through a competitive nomination and selection process for their focus on the following:

  • Delivery of an inspiring and empowering student experience in the classroom including implementation of high-quality PLTW programs.
  • Expanded access to career learning for students in the school and community.
  • Teacher leadership within the classroom, school, or district, using innovative methods to engage students in activity, project, problem-based learning, and active pursuit of professional and personal development.

 

PLTW Outstanding Teachers and PLTW Outstanding Educational Leaders and will be recognized at PLTW Summit experiences across the country.

 

Pathways at NPS are a series of related courses created to lead student learning about a particular topic. These areas of study provide the opportunity for students to participate in an industry or career experience. A pathway typically includes a  partnership between the school, high-level institution such as an university, and an industry leader. The pre-engineering pathway is designed as a flexible four-year sequence that will fit into any students schedule and is taught in conjunction with traditional math and science courses.


Research shows that Project Lead The Way students are five times as likely as other students to choose engineering and related disciplines in college and they have a higher retention rate in post-secondary engineering, science and related programs.
