Norwalk Public Schools is pleased to announce that students across the district will resume indoor musical activities including instrumental lessons, choir and theater over the next few weeks. After consulting state guidelines, the latest aerosol studies, and collaborating with the Norwalk Health Department and medical advisor, NPS determined that musical activity could safely resume following strict protocol. This shift is also possible due to the slow decline of Covid cases within the community.

While engaged in musical activities, all students must be spaced 10 feet apart for a maximum of 30 minutes with masks, followed by 30 minutes of non-playing or singing. Those playing instruments will be required to wear slit masks and utilize bell covers for brass and woodwind instruments. Schools will provide appropriate PPE for these activities. Theater activity will also resume. Details regarding audience attendance are still being determined. Strings and percussion lessons will continue to be offered in person and virtually for remote students.

Throughout the pandemic, students have engaged in music lessons virtually or outdoors when appropriate. Music lessons will continue to be part of Norwalk’s musical fabric as a way to provide quality instruction to students who may not have access to private lessons outside of school. The practice of pulling students out of class for small group music instruction and small instruction will now resume. Virtual lessons continue to be an option for remote students.

Because every building is set up differently, each school will be working on their own unique arrangements to keep within these guidelines.  Schools will be in touch with families directly with more information and timing.

Over the past year, NPS staff has pivoted curriculum to continue to engage students in music in a safe way. Students have focused on learning music theory, song writing, and piano playing via digital keyboards. Teachers have also worked with students to appreciate world music, percussion, including drumming, and music technology in K-12. Students have also performed in virtual concerts, and submitted pieces through the online app Flipgrid.

Norwalk is proud to continue to foster its longstanding tradition of musical excellence including a nationally recognized marching band, elite strings program, Broadway-style theater performances, popular choral concerts and more.
