Eight Brien McMahon High School Senators will join over 11,000 people in Dallas, Texas on June 27 through July 1 for the International HOSA Conference (Health Occupations for Students of America). The Brien McMahon HOSA chapter is a student run afterschool program that supports students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. HOSA is one aspect of the McMahon Healthcare Academy, an initiative in alignment with the Strategic Operating Plan goal to prepare students for career and post-secondary success through pathways.

Brien McMahon students qualified to compete at the upcoming conference by placing in the top three at the Connecticut HOSA Competition, which took place on March 10 in Waterbury. More than nineteen other HOSA chapters from around the state also participated.

Since its inception three years ago, the Brien McMahon HOSA chapter has grown from nine students to over 43. Students focus on researching careers in healthcare, promoting and managing multiple American Red Cross blood drives a year, organizing the JDRF walk to support Type 1 diabetes, bringing in speakers from various medical fields, service learning, managing an annual Health & Wellness Fair and preparing for HOSA state competitions.

HOSA students will participate in fundraising to support the cost of the upcoming trip. Questions and fundraising opportunities can be communicated to HOSA advisors Amy Connell or Susan Quatrella at quatrellas@norwalkps.org or connellla@norwalkps.org
